A detailed look at how PrestaShop 8 Hreflang Module — Multilingual SEO Alternate Tags | DataFirefly works, why we built it the way we did, and the thinking behind the features above.
Why hreflang tags are essential for multilingual SEO
Without hreflang tags, Google does not know which version of a page to display based on the visitor's language or region. It may index the wrong version, create duplicate content across your language stores, or show an English page to a French-speaking visitor. Hreflang tags solve this: they tell Google that your fr-FR, en-GB and de-DE pages are variants of the same page, and which URL to serve to each audience. This is a prerequisite for serious international SEO.
Tags generated with real translated URLs per language
Most hreflang solutions simply replace the domain on the current URL. datafireflyhreflang goes further: for each recognised page type (product, category, CMS, manufacturer, supplier, homepage, standard pages), the module uses the native PrestaShop Link class to build the URL in the target language. A product slug in French will differ from the Spanish slug — the module handles this correctly. If generation fails or the page type is not recognised, a smart fallback replaces the domain and adapts the language prefix.
Configuring multistore shop groups
If your PrestaShop infrastructure uses multiple stores to target different markets (store-fr.com, store-de.com, store-en.com), groups allow you to link them. Create a group, add your stores to it, and the module automatically generates hreflang tags that include all stores in the group on every page. Without a group, each store manages its own tags independently.
x-default, alternate URL and the full list of codes
The hreflang=x-default tag tells Google the default version to serve when no variant matches the visitor's language. Configure it by simply checking the Default checkbox on the relevant entry. Each entry can also have a custom alternate URL — useful if your store is hosted on a subdomain different from the main domain. The module offers over 70 hreflang codes covering all European, American, Asian and Middle Eastern markets.
