Frequently asked questions
Why leave Magento now?
Three reasons keep coming up: (1) total cost — between Adobe Commerce licenses, Cloud hosting, DBAs, and certified Magento developers, TCO often exceeds €100k/year for a mid-sized shop; (2) complexity — every minor evolution needs a specialist; (3) end of cycle — Magento Open Source is losing momentum, and Adobe Commerce's future has been uncertain since the acquisition. Shopware 6 on Symfony is simpler to maintain, faster to evolve, and typically costs 40-60% less in TCO.
How long does a Magento → Shopware migration take?
For a mid-sized shop (5-20k SKUs, B2C or simple B2B, few custom modules): 3 to 5 months. For a complex shop (50k+ SKUs, advanced B2B, integrated ERP, many custom modules): 6 to 12 months. The two major phases are data migration (1-2 months) and custom module rewriting (often the longest).
Do we keep products, customers, orders?
Yes, fully, but with mapping. Magento models configurable products as a parent + N children — Shopware uses a different "variants" model. Mapping is systematic. Magento attributes (EAV) become Shopware custom fields. Past orders are kept for history but moved to read-only ("Magento archive" status) so they don't break invoicing.
What about B2B? Sub-users, per-customer pricing, quotes?
It's one of the most reassuring points. Shopware 6 has an official B2B Suite (premium) and a mature B2B plugin ecosystem. Every Magento B2B feature has a direct equivalent: sub-users with roles, per-customer pricing, quantity tiers, quotes, price lists, multi-buyer corporate accounts. Magento → Shopware permissions mapping is documented and tested.
Risk of losing SEO positions?
Yes, mandatory. Complete SEO plan: Magento URL → Shopware URL mapping (keeping slugs where possible), systematic 301 redirects, sitemap update, validated product JSON-LD, correct multi-Sales Channel hreflang. We monitor Search Console for 90 days post-switch to handle any signal drop. Typical result: -10% to -20% positions at D+30, return to previous levels at D+90 if everything is well managed.
How much does the migration cost?
For a standard Magento Open Source 2.4.x → Shopware 6.7 project: from €25,000 (mid-sized shop without complex B2B). For an Adobe Commerce migration with B2B Suite, integrated ERP, and 50k+ SKUs: €80,000 to €200,000. We firmly quote after a 3-5 day preliminary audit that determines actual complexity.
Are my custom Magento modules reusable?
Yes. All custom Magento modules (Zend Framework + JavaScript) need to be rewritten for Shopware (Symfony + Vue 3). It's often the largest line item in the quote. We provide an inventory of your Magento modules during the audit with, for each: feasibility on Shopware, existing alternative on the Shopware Store, or estimated custom rewrite. You decide what to keep, simplify, or drop.
Do we have to stop production during the migration?
No. The final migration is done in two steps: a complete Magento dump on D-day (data frozen at switchover), then DNS / load balancer switch to Shopware. Typical downtime: 2-6 hours, in a night or weekend window. During preparation (3-12 months depending on the project), Magento runs in parallel with no production impact.
