Frequently asked questions
When does Magento remain the right choice?
Three cases where Magento remains relevant: (1) you're already on Magento Adobe Commerce with a recent investment (multi-year licenses already paid) and a complex module ecosystem — keep Magento until end of cycle; (2) you're US-based and most of your B2B clients require Adobe Commerce in their RFPs; (3) you need very specific Magento B2B features (never matched by Shopware on certain edge cases). In all other cases, Shopware 6 has become the best open-source e-commerce option in Europe.
Is Shopware really cheaper than Magento?
Over 3 years for a 10k-SKU B2B shop: Magento Open Source ~€80-150k (hosting, DBA, certified devs, modules), Magento Adobe Commerce ~€150-300k (license + Cloud hosting + ops), Shopware ~€50-90k (hosting, more accessible Symfony devs, less expensive Store plugins). The savings are significant: 30-60% less TCO when switching to Shopware. No license, more available devs, simpler-to-maintain modules.
Why is Shopware recruiting easier?
Magento uses a proprietary framework (Magento Framework, ex-Zend) with specifics rare in the dev market. Result: few certified Magento devs, high salaries (€60-90k/year for a senior dev), high turnover. Shopware uses Symfony 7 + Vue 3 + Doctrine — modern, common stack. Recruiting a Symfony dev is much simpler, cheaper (€50-70k/year), and more sustainable. It's become a key argument for CIOs who need to staff an internal team.
What about B2B? Are they equivalent?
Nearly tied on 95% of features. Shopware B2B Suite (premium) covers: sub-users with roles, per-customer pricing, quantity tiers, quotes, price lists, multi-buyer corporate accounts, employee provisioning. Magento B2B (Adobe Commerce) has slightly more mature features for complex approval workflows (5+ levels), advanced requisition lists. For 90% of B2B projects, the two are equivalent — the choice is made on TCO and tech stack.
How much does a Magento → Shopware migration cost?
Standard Magento Open Source 2.4.x → Shopware 6.7 migration: from €25,000, delivered in 3-5 months for a mid-sized shop. Magento Adobe Commerce migration with B2B Suite, integrated ERP, and 50k+ SKUs: €80,000 to €200,000, delivered in 6-12 months. See our dedicated Magento to Shopware Migration page for details.
What about production performance?
Shopware has made major progress on the modern storefront (Storefront SDK, headless API). Magento has an established reputation for B2B catalog performance (but mainly because shops are massively cached by Varnish). On comparable configurations: Shopware 6.7 + Redis + Varnish achieves "good" Core Web Vitals on 50k+ SKU catalogs without difficulty. The difference is mainly in dev quality and optimization, not in the platform itself.
What's the future of Magento (Adobe Commerce)?
Adobe Commerce has an uncertain future since the acquisition. Adobe has announced the gradual phase-out of the on-premise offering in favor of Cloud, with regular price increases. Magento Open Source continues to live but with fewer evolutions. The Magento community is eroding in favor of Shopware, Sylius, or Spryker. It's one of the strategic reasons to migrate now — avoid having to re-migrate in 3 years under pressure.
Can you support me on the choice between Shopware and Magento?
Yes: we've been coding on Shopware 6 since 2019, we've supported Magento → Shopware migrations regularly. We can do a comparative audit on your specific case: catalog volume, B2B configuration, integrated ERP, custom modules, technical team. Consulting audit at €1,200 (5 days) that delivers a costed recommendation and a binding implementation plan.
