PrestaShop VAT & taxation

Our best PrestaShop modules for cross-border VAT

Three modules — and a threshold you stop missing.

You cross the €10,000 threshold without noticing — and from then on you pay the gap between your rate and the customer's. The question isn't which rate you apply, but whether your store knows it automatically.

The problem

Sound familiar?

A threshold you don't see coming

It accumulates across all countries and gets crossed quietly. After that, every invoice is wrong.

A VAT you end up carrying

The customer pays what was on the screen. The gap to the right rate is yours.

A B2B customer with no checked number

An invalid VAT number, and you owe the VAT you didn't charge.

A rate nobody set

A product goes live with no tax rate — and the mistake affects a whole category.

You cross the €10,000 threshold without noticing

That’s the trap of cross-border VAT. As long as your sales into other EU countries stay under €10,000 a year, you charge your national VAT. The moment you cross it, you have to apply the VAT of your customer’s country — for every country, from the first euro over.

And the wrong VAT isn’t a rounding error

It’s a wrong invoice, a wrong return, and an amount you end up carrying yourself. The customer paid what was on the screen; the gap to the correct rate is yours.

The right question isn’t “which rate do I apply”

It’s: does my store apply the right one automatically, does it know the B2B case, and can I file at quarter-end without manual maths. Three questions, one subject.

Buying guide

How to choose

First, understand the threshold you cross quietly

Under €10,000 of cross-border EU turnover you charge your national VAT. Above it, the customer's country's. The threshold accumulates across all countries and gets crossed quietly — one good month, and every following invoice at the wrong rate costs you the gap.

Then automate the right rate — OSS

The OSS rate is applied by the customer's country, and a single return in your own replaces registering in each one. This is the most common and most expensive mistake when it's missing.

Then secure the B2B case — VIES

A valid B2B customer with a checked VAT number is invoiced without VAT (reverse charge). But only with a VIES check: an invalid number, and you owe the VAT you didn't charge.

And close the chain at the start — the tax rule

The best automation is useless if a product is created with no tax rate. A default rule at creation ensures no product slips through the net — the invisible mistake that can affect whole categories.

What you gain

The right rate, no manual maths

The OSS rate is applied automatically by the customer's country, the moment the threshold falls.

The threshold you stop missing

The €10,000 threshold is monitored. You learn you're crossing it — before the tax office does.

The B2B case, handled right

VIES check of the VAT number and reverse charge. The valid B2B customer is correctly invoiced without VAT.

The return, already sorted

The OSS return is prepared, broken down by country. No quarter-end spreadsheet.

No product without a rate

The tax rule fires at product creation. No product goes live without the right rate.

The right metric

Not revenue. The share of correctly-taxed orders is the number that survives an audit.

Implementation

From install to results

  1. Monitor the €10,000 threshold

It accumulates across all countries and gets crossed quietly.

  2. Apply the right rate automatically

The OSS rate by customer country, a single return in your own.

  3. Check the B2B VAT number

A checked number secures reverse charge. A wrong one costs you the VAT.

  4. Set the tax rule at creation

No product goes live without the right rate.

  5. Measure the right number

Not revenue. The share of correctly-taxed orders.

“We crossed the €10,000 threshold in May and noticed in November. Six months of invoices at the wrong rate. We remitted the gap out of our own pocket — the customer had long since paid.”

Frequently asked questions

What is the €10,000 threshold?

It's a shared EU distance-selling threshold: as long as your cross-border B2C sales in the EU stay under €10,000 a year, you charge your national VAT. Above it, you must apply the VAT of the destination country — for every country, from the first euro over the threshold.

Why is this threshold dangerous?

Because it accumulates and gets crossed quietly. One good month across several countries and you're over it without noticing. From then on every invoice at your national rate is wrong — and the gap is carried by you, not the customer.

OSS or IOSS — what's the difference?

OSS (One-Stop Shop) lets you remit the VAT due across all EU countries through a single return in your own country, instead of registering in each one. IOSS is the equivalent for imports under €150. Without using the right one, you multiply the formalities.

And my B2B customer's VAT number?

If your B2B customer has a valid VAT number in another EU country, you invoice without VAT — they account for it themselves (reverse charge). But only if the number is checked via VIES. An invalid number, and you owe the VAT you didn't charge.

Why check the VAT number via VIES?

Because the VIES database says in real time whether the number exists and is valid. Without a check, you trust a number your customer typed — and if it's wrong, you carry the VAT you didn't charge. The check is the only thing that secures reverse charge.

Which metric should I track?

The share of correctly-taxed orders — not revenue. An audit doesn't look at how much you sold, but at whether every invoice carries the right rate. That number is the only one that survives a control.

Where do I start?

With the OSS rate and threshold monitoring, because that covers the most common and most expensive mistake. Then VIES checking for B2B. The tax rule at product creation closes the chain — so no new product goes live without a rate.
