Frequently asked questions
WooCommerce or Shopify: which one to choose for my project?
Clear rules: (1) If you're starting without a technical team, without budget, and you want to be live within 1-2 days — Shopify. (2) If you already have a WordPress blog with traffic and content, and you want to add commerce without breaking your existing SEO — WooCommerce, no question. (3) If you want full control over code, SEO, costs (no Shopify transaction fees) — WooCommerce. (4) If you want predictable cash flow and you're willing to pay for simplicity — Shopify. The majority of growth-stage SMB projects win long-term with WooCommerce.
Is WooCommerce cheaper than Shopify?
Shopify looks cheaper initially (€29/month Basic) but quickly equalizes: Shopify subscription (€29-2000+/month), transaction fees (0.5-2% on every sale unless Shopify Payments), monthly apps (€200-500/month combined). WooCommerce is free at the core, requires hosting (€15-100/month), plugins (one-time purchase or annual subscription), a theme (€50-300 one-time). Over 3 years with €500k revenue: Shopify ~€50-90k, WooCommerce ~€12-25k.
Which one is better for SEO?
WooCommerce wins clearly, especially if you already have content. WordPress is one of the most powerful CMSs for content SEO: free URL structures, customizable sitemap, structured data via plugins (Yoast, Rank Math), optional AMP, proper multilingual hreflang. Shopify is more constrained: frozen sitemap, imposed URL structure (/products/, /collections/), redirects via limited interface, limited Shopify blog vs full-features WordPress. If your acquisition strategy relies on content SEO, WooCommerce is the right choice.
What about blog / content marketing integration?
Clear advantage WooCommerce. WordPress is the reference for professional blogging: Gutenberg blocks, structured content, taxonomies, custom post types, mature SEO plugins. Shopify has an integrated blog but much more limited (little customization, no advanced blogging plugins, imposed URL structure). For brands doing content marketing, WooCommerce is the option that scales.
What about subscriptions / membership?
Shopify Subscriptions has the advantage of simplicity but fees pile up (paid subscription apps, transaction fees on every renewal). WooCommerce Subscriptions (official by Woo, €199/year) or a custom direct Stripe system give more flexibility on business logic (pause, upgrade, dunning, prorating) and zero additional transaction fees. For 100% subscription shops, WooCommerce saves money very quickly.
Do you support Shopify to WooCommerce migrations?
Yes, it's one of the most frequent migrations. We have a dedicated page (Shopify to WooCommerce Migration) detailing the process: data carryover via Shopify Admin API, systematic 301 redirects, design rework as Gutenberg theme, active subscriptions handled. From €4,500 depending on complexity.
What about ownership / control?
WooCommerce is fully open source, hosted with you, modifiable however you want. If you leave WooCommerce, you take everything with you: code, database, design, custom plugins. Shopify doesn't give you source code. If Shopify raises prices (it has happened multiple times recently) or changes its terms, you have no choice: pay or rebuild everywhere else. With WooCommerce, you're the owner.
Can you support me on platform choice?
Yes: we've been coding on WooCommerce for 8+ years, we've also supported Shopify projects (in migration or initial build). We can do a comparative audit on your specific case: catalog volume, type of business, existing blog, technical team, budget. Consulting audit at €590 (3-5 days) that delivers a costed recommendation and implementation plan.
