A detailed look at how Social Proof — Purchase Notifications & Live Visitors works, why we built it the way we did, and the thinking behind the features above.
Social proof that reassures instead of worrying
Most social proof modules invent fake purchases and fake visitors. It works for a few weeks, until a customer notices, and it qualifies as a misleading commercial practice under consumer law. This module takes the opposite stance: it only displays orders actually placed in your store, filtered by status and time window. If there is nothing to show, it shows nothing. Your social proof stays true, and therefore durable.
Three anonymization levels, your choice
First name and last initial (Marie L.), city only (A customer from Nice) or full anonymity (Someone): you pick the level of detail that fits your audience. In every case, anonymization is applied server-side before anything is sent to the browser, and relative times are deliberately rounded to prevent re-identifying a customer by cross-referencing the exact time of an order.
A visitor counter that respects your visitors
The live visitor badge on the product page works without a single cookie. Each visitor is counted through a SHA-256 fingerprint salted with your shop's secret key, never displayed, never exposed, and purged automatically from the database. A minimum display threshold (3 by default) guarantees a lone visitor is never singled out, and the activity window is adjustable to the minute.
Built GDPR-first, not retrofitted
No raw customer data ever travels to the front office: notification texts arrive already anonymized and formatted. The module sets no cookies, loads no external resources, and documents its guarantees in a Privacy by design panel right in the back office, ready to show your DPO. All in vanilla JS, with no jQuery and no Composer dependency.
