PrestaShop accessibility widget with automatic WCAG fixes for EAA compliance
v1.0.1 · updated 2026-07-16
What it does

The short version.

01

Keyboard accessible visitor widget

Floating button opening a complete panel: 5-step text size, high contrast, readable font, spacing, link highlighting, big cursor, reading guide, animation stop and image hiding. Full keyboard navigation with focus trap and Escape to close.

02

Smart high contrast

Unlike widgets that whiten everything and break sliders, our mode analyzes the DOM: only solid colored backgrounds are lightened, background images are preserved and their texts receive a readable plate. Your visuals stay intact.

03

Alt texts and labels repaired automatically

Images without an alt attribute receive a text derived from the product title, caption or file name. Unlabelled form fields receive an aria-label. Every served page is more compliant than your original theme.

04

WCAG AA contrast correction

The engine scans visible texts, computes relative luminance and automatically corrects colors below the 4.5 ratio required by WCAG criterion 1.4.3 — executed during browser idle time, with no impact on your Core Web Vitals.

05

Accessibility statement in 1 click

The EAA mandates publishing an accessibility statement. The module generates a CMS page following the Directive (EU) 2019/882 + EN 301 549 format in every active language — FR, EN, ES, DE and IT included — with contact link and enforcement procedure.

06

Due diligence proof in the back office

Anonymous daily counters of applied fixes (alt, labels, contrasts, links, ARIA), aggregated per shop over 30 days. In case of an audit, you document your accessibility measures in one screen.

A detailed look at how EAA Accessibility — Widget & Automatic WCAG Fixes works, why we built it the way we did, and the thinking behind the features above.

§ 01

Accessibility is no longer optional: the EAA is in force

Since 28 June 2025, the European Accessibility Act applies to e-commerce websites. Online stores must be perceivable, operable, understandable and robust within the meaning of the EN 301 549 standard, publish an accessibility statement and offer a feedback channel. Penalties vary by member state and can reach tens of thousands of euros, with advocacy groups actively testing merchant websites. If your PrestaShop store has not implemented anything yet, every week of delay increases your exposure.

§ 02

Two complementary engines: widget and auto-fixes

Most solutions stop at a cosmetic widget. This module combines two approaches. The widget gives every visitor control over their reading comfort: text size, contrast, font, spacing, reading guide. The fix engine, meanwhile, actually repairs the WCAG defects of your theme on every page load: missing alt attributes, unlabelled form fields, links without a new window warning, untitled iframes, missing ARIA landmarks, invisible keyboard focus and insufficient contrast. Your served pages are objectively more compliant, not merely customizable.

§ 03

A high contrast mode that does not break your store

High contrast is the historical weak point of accessibility widgets: by forcing a white background on every element, they wipe out slider visuals, promotional banners and overlays. Our implementation analyzes each element: solid colored backgrounds are lightened, but any element carrying a background image is preserved and its texts receive a semi-opaque white plate guaranteeing readability over the visual. Switching back restores your theme identically.

§ 04

Legal accessibility statement in 5 languages

Publishing an accessibility statement is a formal EAA obligation. In one click from the module configuration, a CMS page is created in every active language of your store: compliance status, available features, feedback channel pointing to your contact form and enforcement procedure towards the competent national authority. The FR, EN, ES, DE and IT templates are included and follow the structure expected by Directive (EU) 2019/882 and EN 301 549. Running the generation again refreshes the existing page, for instance after a module update.

§ 05

Privacy by design

Accessibility should not cost personal data. Visitor preferences are stored only in their browser localStorage and applied before the first paint of the page — they never reach your servers. Back office statistics are plain anonymous daily counters aggregated per shop, with no cookie, no identifier, no external request. The module is therefore consistent with your GDPR policy without any extra configuration.
