A detailed look at how EAA Accessibility: Widget & Automatic WCAG Fixes works, why we built it the way we did, and the thinking behind the features above.
Accessibility is no longer optional: the EAA is in force
Since 28 June 2025, the European Accessibility Act applies to e-commerce websites. Online stores must be perceivable, operable, understandable and robust within the meaning of the EN 301 549 standard, publish an accessibility statement and offer a feedback channel. Penalties vary by member state and can reach tens of thousands of euros, with advocacy groups actively testing merchant websites. If your PrestaShop store has not implemented anything yet, every week of delay increases your exposure.
Two complementary engines: widget and automatic fixes
The widget gives every visitor control over their reading comfort, with the options you chose to offer. The fix engine repairs the WCAG defects of your theme on every page load: missing alt attributes, unlabelled form fields, links without a new window warning, untitled iframes, missing ARIA landmarks, invisible keyboard focus and insufficient contrast. It also watches content added after load, such as faceted search product lists, quick view or the cart modal.
A high contrast mode that does not break your store
High contrast is the historical weak point of accessibility widgets: by forcing a white background and full opacity on every element, they wipe out slider visuals and bring back hidden slides, collapsed menus and modal backdrops. Here each element is analyzed: solid backgrounds and gradients turn white, background image elements are kept and their texts get a semi-opaque white plate, and nothing hidden reappears. The whole page is processed, footer included, and turning it off restores your original styles.
Legal accessibility statement in 8 languages
Publishing an accessibility statement is a formal EAA obligation. In one click from the module configuration, a CMS page is created in every active language of your store: compliance status, available features, feedback channel to your contact form in the page language, and enforcement procedure towards the competent national authority. FR, EN, ES, DE, IT, NL, PL and PT templates are included. Running the generation again refreshes the existing page, after a confirmation so your manual edits are not overwritten by mistake.
Privacy by design
Visitor preferences are stored only in their browser localStorage and applied before the first paint of the page: they never reach your servers. Back office statistics are plain anonymous daily counters, merged in the browser and sent at most once a minute per visitor, with no cookie and no identifier. The module therefore stays consistent with your GDPR policy without extra configuration.
