A detailed look at how Tile, Paint & Wallpaper Quantity Calculator for PrestaShop 8 & 9 works, why we built it the way we did, and the thinking behind the features above.
Why a calculator sells in building and decoration
On a product sold by the box, can or roll, the customer has to convert their measurements into sales units before ordering. That is where they give up, or order the wrong amount: too little, and a second delivery is needed whose dye batch may not match; too much, and the surplus comes back as a return. The calculator does this conversion on the product page with trade rules, and turns the question “how many?” into a quantity in the cart.
Trade calculation rules, not a simple division
Wallpaper is counted in strips: wall width divided by roll width, height plus 10 cm for trimming rounded up to the pattern repeat, then the number of full strips per roll. Paint takes coats and coverage into account and subtracts an average area per door and window. Volume is converted into bags using the density of the material. Each result is rounded to the pack size and the minimum order quantity, and the customer sees the spare they will have left.
SEO pages on the queries of your sector
“How many boxes of tiles for 20 m²”, “paint calculator m²”, “how many rolls of wallpaper”: these searches carry a clear buying intent. The module creates one page per calculation type, with default texts written for these queries in 8 languages that you can rewrite. The page contains the calculator, an explanation of the method and your products, each with the quantity and price for the measurements entered. Visitors then find their measurements again on the product page.
A setup that follows your catalogue
The content of one unit (m² per box, litres per can, roll size, bag weight) is entered in the Modules tab of the product page, per combination if needed. If your catalogue already holds this information in a feature, select it once and every product concerned works. Activation is done by category in one operation, and a product without packaging information stays hidden rather than showing a wrong calculation.
Tracked through to the order
When the customer adds to cart from the calculator, their measurements are saved with the cart line. The cart shows them again, with a warning if the quantity was changed afterwards, and the order page in the back office displays them. If a customer disputes a quantity, you know exactly what they measured.
