A detailed look at how PrestaShop Dummy Data Generator: Fake Products, Customers and Orders for Testing works, why we built it the way we did, and the thinking behind the features above.
Why an empty shop tests nothing
PrestaShop demo data holds a dozen products and a few orders. A theme that looks fast on that base can collapse on a category of 800 products, a statistics module can show empty charts, an accounting export may never have met a credit slip or an order in pounds sterling. This module creates the volume and variety a real shop builds up over several years.
A believable catalog in all your languages
Products are spread across 8 universes, with names built from a vocabulary translated into French, English, Spanish, German, Italian, Dutch, Polish and Portuguese. Prices follow a realistic distribution with .90 or .99 endings, some products are on sale, others out of stock. Combinations, native packs, virtual products, brands and features give you enough to test filters, product pages and listings in conditions close to production.
Orders that add up to the last cent
Orders are written without a payment module and without sending email, but into the same tables the core uses: order lines, taxes, carrier, dated status history, payment, invoice. Totals are checked: products, discounts and shipping match the amount paid. Refunded orders get a credit slip, business customers pay their group price, and the spread over time follows a gradual growth with evening peaks.
Test your server, not only your shop
Each generation produces a report: average time per product, per order or per customer, records per minute, peak PHP memory. Run the same preset before and after a hosting move, a PHP upgrade or a MySQL setting change, and you compare figures instead of impressions. The Stress test preset goes up to 20,000 products and 150,000 orders, and the command line lets you go further without a browser open.
Remove everything without breaking anything
The module keeps track of every object it creates. The purge deletes them in the right order, orders and credit slips first, catalog last, and leaves your real products, customers and orders untouched. If test orders were placed on your real products, their stock is given back. The purge runs in batches with a progress bar and can target one generation or all the generations of the shop.
