PrestaShop 8 & 9 Server Migration: Move Your Shop to a New Host

Move your shop to a new server without FTP marathons, broken URLs or a full disk.

Changing host usually means copying gigabytes over FTP, exporting a database that times out, then hunting old URLs in settings and modules. Server Migration does it in one guided flow. It measures the shop and the free space first. It packs files and database in short steps that resume after any interruption. It sends the package straight to the new server, where a standalone installer restores it and rewrites database access, domains, serialized data and .htaccess. Your current shop is only read, never modified.

At a glance
  • Complete migration of files and database to a new server, a new domain or a sub-folder
  • Pre-flight checks with real numbers: shop size, estimated package, free disk space, PHP limits
  • Direct server-to-server transfer in signed chunks, or package download for FTP
  • Standalone installer in 8 languages: database, domains, serialized data, .htaccess and caches
  • Safe by design: disk space guard, resume after any interruption, installer that deletes itself

PrestaShop server migration pre-flight checks: files, database, estimated package and free disk space
v2.0.1 · updated 2026-11-02
What it does

The short version.

01

Checks with numbers, not a green tick

Before anything is written, the module measures the files and the database, estimates the package (compressed and worst case) and compares it with the free disk space. It lists the largest folders and tables, and detects another PrestaShop copy stored in a sub-folder, such as an old staging, so you can leave it out in one click.

02

The live shop is never put at risk

The shop is only read: files are opened read-only and the database is exported with read queries on a separate connection. During the build, the module keeps at least 128 MB free on the disk. If space runs short, the build pauses with the reason and the fix, then resumes with Retry. Customers keep ordering.

03

Straight from one server to the other

No need to download gigabytes and upload them again by FTP. The package travels in chunks signed with HMAC-SHA256 to the installer on the new server. Before sending, the module checks that the destination has the right PHP version and enough disk space. An interrupted transfer resumes from the last confirmed byte.

04

A restore that knows PrestaShop

The installer writes the new database access in parameters.php, updates ps_shop_url and the domain settings of every shop, replaces old URLs everywhere in the database without breaking serialized data, recreates the symbolic links of PrestaShop 9, lets PrestaShop regenerate .htaccess and empties the caches. Then it checks the result on its own.

The long version

Everything you'd want to know before you install.

A detailed look at how PrestaShop 8 & 9 Server Migration: Move Your Shop to a New Host works, why we built it the way we did, and the thinking behind the features above.

§ 01

Why server migrations go wrong

A PrestaShop shop is tens of thousands of files and a database full of absolute URLs, some of them inside serialized module settings. Copied by hand, the transfer stops halfway, the SQL import times out, the disk of the old server fills up during the backup, and after the DNS switch the shop still points to the old domain. Server Migration turns these traps into a guided flow with a check at each step.

§ 02

Measure first, then build

The first step analyses the shop: number and size of files, database size, estimated package and free disk space, with the largest folders and tables. A copy of PrestaShop stored in a sub-folder is detected and can be excluded in one click. If the package will not fit, the module says so with numbers before anything is written.

§ 03

A build that never breaks the live shop

Files are read and the database is exported with read queries, in steps of a few seconds that resume exactly where they stopped. A safety margin of 128 MB is kept free on the disk: if it runs short, the build pauses instead of filling the disk, and resumes with one click once space is freed. A database-only package lets you sync the last orders just before the switch.

§ 04

From one server to the other, without your computer

Upload the installer to the new host, paste its address, test the connection: the module checks the PHP version, the free space and the write access of the destination. The package then goes straight from server to server in signed chunks. If you prefer, download the package and upload it by FTP: the installer finds it by itself.

§ 05

A restore that finishes the job

The installer tests the new database before writing anything, then extracts, imports and rewrites: parameters.php, ps_shop_url, domain settings per shop, URLs in every table including serialized data, symbolic links, .htaccess regenerated by PrestaShop and caches. It then checks the result, shows a go-live checklist and deletes itself 24 hours later at the latest.
