PrestaShop Catalogue Management

Group Products as Variants in PrestaShop 8 & 9: Amazon-Style Color and Size Selector

One color, one page, one URL. A single selector to move between them.

You create one product per color so that each one has its own page, its own photos and its own place in Google, but shoppers never see that it also comes in blue or black. This module links those pages together: on each one, a Color: Red selector shows swatches of the other colors, and one click opens the chosen page. The products stay independent, with their own URL, stock and SEO. In category pages, you can show a single card per group, with swatches of the other colors and an image that changes on hover.

Group Products as Variants in PrestaShop 8 & 9: Amazon-Style Color and Size Selector
v1.2.0 · updated 2026-09-23
What it does

The short version.

01

The Amazon selector, on separate products

On the Red T-shirt page, shoppers see Color: Red and swatches of the other colors. One click opens the page of the chosen color. With two axes, color and size, the module keeps the current size when the shopper switches color, and shows combinations that do not exist with a dashed border.

02

Each color indexed on its own

Each variant keeps its URL, title, meta description and images. The module adds schema.org ProductGroup structured data with hasVariant and variesBy, plus the displayed price and availability of each variant. If your color pages are near duplicates, an option points their canonical URL to the main product.

03

Cleaner category pages

Optionally, a single card per group in category listings. The featured product is the first one of the group or the first one in stock, recalculated on every stock movement. Under the price, swatches of the other colors link to their pages, and the card image changes on hover.

04

Groups created in minutes

The assistant spots products created one per color, for example with DF ProductSplitter, by comparing names or reference roots, and proposes groups you tick. For a large catalog, the CSV import runs a dry-run analysis that lists every rejected line with its reason.

The long version

A detailed look at how Group Products as Variants in PrestaShop 8 & 9: Amazon-Style Color and Size Selector works, why we built it the way we did, and the thinking behind the features above.

§ 01

Why one product per color

A PrestaShop product with combinations has a single URL: the red T-shirt and the blue T-shirt share the same page, the same title and the same Google position. Many merchants therefore create one product per color, by hand or with DF ProductSplitter, so that each color gets its own page, its own photos and its own chance on the search blue T-shirt. The downside: nothing on the red page says it also exists in blue. This module fills that gap; it is the reverse move of ProductSplitter.

§ 02

How the pages are linked

A group brings together several products and one or more axes. Each axis is a native attribute group, so the colors, textures and translations already entered in Catalog > Attributes are reused. For each product of the group, you set its value on each axis. The order of the group rows gives the order of the swatches, and a button sorts the rows by attribute order.

§ 03

What shoppers see

On each page of the group, the selector sits above the add-to-cart button. The current variant is outlined, the others are links to their pages, and a loading indicator appears on click. An out-of-stock variant is faded and struck through, or hidden depending on your setting. In listings, swatches appear under the price and the card image changes on hover.

§ 04

Built for SEO

Links between variants are real HTML links, which strengthens internal linking. Each page keeps its own canonical, or points it to the main product if you choose so. The ProductGroup JSON-LD block describes the group with the price shown to the shopper, and the single-product-per-group option relies on native product visibility: the other pages stay online, reachable and findable through the internal search.
