A detailed look at how Geolocation Language & Country Suggestion for PrestaShop 8 & 9 (No Redirect) works, why we built it the way we did, and the thinking behind the features above.
Why automatic IP redirects are a bad idea
Redirecting visitors by IP looks convenient, but Googlebot mostly crawls from the United States: it gets sent to a single version and never sees the others. Hreflang annotations become inconsistent, pages drop out of the index, and visitors abroad who really wanted your French version can no longer reach it. Google recommends suggesting rather than forcing, which is exactly what this module does.
A precise suggestion, at the right moment
Each destination is a store and language pair, with the countries it serves and the browser languages it accepts. The module scores every destination and shows the banner only when one fits better than the current page. A store reserved for the United States is never suggested to an Irish visitor, and a Dutch-speaking Belgian on your French site is offered the Dutch version of the same page.
Country detection without a MaxMind account or external service
If your store sits behind Cloudflare or CloudFront, the country comes from the CDN header. Otherwise, one click in the back office installs a free public-domain IP-to-country database covering IPv4 and IPv6. It is stored on your server and read locally with the library already shipped with PrestaShop: no visitor IP address is sent to a third party.
A polished banner that gets in the way of neither conversion nor your cookie banner
The banner appears after the page has loaded, in a fixed position, with no layout shift. It waits for your cookie banner to close so two banners never stack. Its texts are written in the suggested language: a German visitor reads it in German on your French store. If they ignore it and keep browsing, the following pages only show a small pill.
Measure what the banner brings
The dashboard counts views, clicks and refusals per destination and per country, with a CSV export. Counters are aggregated per day, without IP or customer identifier. Events are also pushed to the dataLayer for Google Tag Manager and GA4, and a simulator shows in one click what a visitor from a given country would see.
